Work to make the Wantagh State Parkway bike path safer is set to begin at the end of the month after a teen was killed by a motorcycle on the path in July.
The state Department of Transportation is installing rumble strips on the bike path at local lawmakers? request. The DOT has also agreed to cut traffic lanes from three to two and to increase the distance between cars and the bike path.
Many bicyclists say what will really make the difference is a guard rail. However, state Sen. Charles Fuschillo (R-Freeport) says that will have to wait, due to budget restrictions.
