Long Island is experiencing the first cold snap of the winter with temperatures expected to remain freezing all week.
Nassau County officials issued winter safety tips ahead of the cold weather:
- To avoid getting frostbite or hypothermia, wear layers of clothing and limit time spent outdoors.
- If you're driving, never attempt to pass a snow plow vehicle.
- To prep your home, stockpile flashlights, a battery-operated radio, non-perishable food and bottled water.
- If the heat goes out during a storm, use a safe alternative heat source such as a fireplace or portable space heater.
- If the lights go out, do not operate generators indoors. The motor emits deadly carbon monoxide gas.
- Do not use a gas oven to heat your home. Prolonged use of an open oven in a closed house can create carbon monoxide gas.
Both Nassau and Suffolk counties have designated some locations as warming centers.
