A community is on edge after two teens were shot at the McDonald’s on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island.

News 12 crews observed an increased police presence, members of Operation H.O.O.D and someone from the Guardian Angels at the McDonald's following Tuesday’s shooting.

Police say the shooting happened just after 4:30 p.m., leaving two teenage girls injured. One was shot in the leg and the other on the foot.

Police sources say the girls heard the shots before they realized they'd been hit.

Resident Heidi Alcerro says this McDonald’s has had issues in the past during the after-school rush. There’s still a sign on the door saying anyone under 18 needs a parent between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. It’s not clear if anyone involved in this shooting was inside at the time or the age of the shooter.

"It was bound to happen sooner or later with these kids and how they are. It's just really crazy with these kids and it can be hard to handle. It's gotten to the point where even the manager has gotten pushed by these kids," said Alcerro.

Police say the two girls are expected to be OK. But Jose Gonzalez, member of the Guardian Angels, says not everyone's story here has ended that way. Years ago, News 12 reported about a 20-year-old who was fatally stabbed at that McDonald's.

“This is the same McDonald’s where 12 years ago we had a stabbing on Easter Sunday for Eddie Harper, so this has constantly been a constant cycle," said Gonzalez.

He tells News 12 that members of the Guardian Angels will be at the McDonald's between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

News 12 reached out to McDonald's for comment but hasn't heard back.

No arrests have been made.
