Members of the Sachem High School East football team and their parents intend to sue the school district for not providing enough counseling and therapy in the wake of their teammate’s death.

Joshua Mileto was among a group of athletes carrying a 400-pound log overhead last year when it fell and struck the 16-year-old in the head. The accident happened on school grounds during an off-season football camp.

Members of that group held a news conference Wednesday as they seek a notice of claim, with the intention of suing the district for $15 million.

"After the incident, after the football season had taken place, we received two counseling sessions from Long Island Trauma,” said Matthew Kmiotek, the captain of the Sachem East team. “We were promised that they would come back…They never came back to help. From my understanding, it was [Sachem Central School District Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Graham’s] decision to not have them come back."

Dr. Graham said Wednesday that the district took steps to provide students with both in-district and out-of-district support. He also said counseling services are still available for anyone in need.
