The Port Authority says it will be closing one of its four runways for six months due to a construction project.
Residents in western Nassau County say they are concerned that the remaining three runways will have more traffic and increased noise as a result of the construction.
"It's getting increasingly worse," said Naomi Morse, of Woodmere. "The intervals of the planes landing has become shorter and shorter."
Officials say the plan is to repave and lengthen the runway by 1,000 feet to meet federal safety standards. The plan will also be widened to accommodate larger aircraft.
The runway will be closed from June 1 to December, according to the Port Authority website.
The Port Authority did not return calls to comment on this report.
