Run at Heckscher State Park honors LI native killed in Parkland shooting
An event Sunday paid special tribute to a Long Island native who was killed in the Parkland school shooting.
The Run 4 Beigel event was held at Heckscher State Park. It marked what would have been Scott Beigel's 37th birthday.
The Dix Hills native was killed protecting students from a mass shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year.
Organizers say every dollar raised at the event goes toward helping underprivileged children affected by gun violence.
Jaime Guttenberg, 14, was also among the 17 people who were killed in the shooting last Valentine's Day. Her uncle Paul Guttenberg was at the event to run in support.
Many who attended the event had never met Beigel, but were inspired by his legacy, values and bravery.
It was not the first Run 4 Biegel event, but the first one held on Long Island.
