(AP) - Many beaches around the New York Citymetropolitan area are closed to swimming Saturday because of roughsurf generated by Hurricane Bill. At least one beach has been shutaltogether as high waves submerged the sand.

State parks official George Gorman says churning seas and themorning high tide flooded the sand Saturday morning at Robert MosesState Park on Fire Island. The beach is expected to reopen forsunbathing in the afternoon.

Gorman says roughly 10-foot waves are pouring onto the beach.

Beaches closed to swimmers - but open for sunbathing - includeJones Beach, Rockaway Beach and Coney Island Beach.

The hurricane's center is expected to stay off the U.S. EastCoast, but forecasters say tropical storm-force winds may reachparts of Massachusetts.
