Teachers say the halls of both Roosevelt Middle and High schools could be dangerous after they say mold was found.
At a rally on Nassau Boulevard, Roosevelt teachers sounded the alarm about the hazardous discovery. Teachers say photos show the mold found throughout the buildings shortly after the first day of school Sept. 14.
"It's on the walls, the keyboard, my desk, everywhere mold is. And they've known since June!" says Charmaine Wiley.
Due to COVID-19, the district has teachers reporting to school to provide virtual lessons to students at home. But teachers are calling to be allowed to work from home until the situation is taken care of.
"It's terrible, thinking we're in there, possibly breathing in the harmful stuff," says Roosevelt Teachers Association President Salvatore Finelli.
The district sent a letter to residents stating an environmental consultant conducted remediation, and a follow-up inspection "confirmed no evidence of mold growth in any of the school buildings within the district as of Sept. 25, 2020." The letter also states they're in the process of replacing and repairing of all HVAC systems in each of the buildings to ensure proper ventilation.
But the teachers rallying say they should still work from home until all of the work is completed. They say they're not only concerned for themselves, but also the kids, who are due back for in-person learning Oct. 19.
"We're in no way out of the woods of being in a dangerous position. We just don't know what's inside," says Finelli.
