Two Christmas trees have been added to the futuristic Santa photo area of Roosevelt Field Mall following an outcry from Long Islanders.
Photos showing this year's photo-staging area devoid of any traditional Christmas decorations went viral online. As News 12 Long Island first reported, a petition was started urging mall management to drop its new set-up, dubbed "Glacier," and instead return to a more classic holiday display. Many customers had threatened to boycott Roosevelt Field and do their holiday shopping elsewhere.
Following News 12's report, mall management responded. "Key elements are still being added to the Glacier experience at Roosevelt Field over the coming week - and after hearing early customer feedback, one of those elements will be a traditional Christmas tree alongside the Glacier experience," management said in a statement. "Together, the mix of traditional and modern design will create a magical North Pole."
The statement says that Roosevelt Field is one of seven malls across the U.S. owned by Simon Properties to roll out "Glacier," which it decribes as "a uniquely modern and interactive Santa experience featuring cutting edge artistic design."
However, many had expressed confusion and outrage that the Santa photo-op area would not include a Christmas tree, ornaments or other traditional decor.
Photos sent in by News 12 viewers late Saturday afternoon show that two medium-sized Christmas trees adorned with lights now flank the "Glacier" display.
