Roosevelt Field evacuated after display case crash sounds like gunshots

Roosevelt Field was evacuated today amid reports of gunshots.

According to a spokesman for Simon Properties, the mall's management, a shoplifter at Macy's knocked into a display case while getting arrested, sending it crashing to the floor. Smaller items in the case fell onto the floor, which some shoppers mistook for gunshots. The mall was evacuated briefly after the incident.

News 12 Long Island reporter Eileen Lehpamer, who was on the scene for another report, says she saw people stampeding toward the exit after the crash. Nassau County police say three people suffered minor injuries when they fell as they were leaving the mall.

Nassau police say no weapon was involved, and no shots were fired. The alleged shoplifter at Macy's was arrested. The mall was reopened shortly after the incident.
