Eight children and two adults safely escaped dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide at a Roosevelt day care center Wednesday.
Fire officials said the carbon monoxide detector sounded at 4:30 p.m. and caretakers evacuated with their charges. Fire officials said the noxious fumes at His Word EduCare Center were at levels three times higher than detectors typically go off.
Officials said the children, ages one through 10, were rushed to Nassau University Medical Center as a precautionary measure. Some showed signs of possible carbon monoxide poisoning with symptoms of dizziness, nausea, headaches and vomiting, officials say.
A NUMC spokesperson said six of the children were evaluated at the pediatric emergency department, but none had to be admitted.
News 12 Long Island spoke with a man who says he owns the house the day care center was in, but he said he did not have any comment.
