The parents of a 12-year-old Roosevelt boy say they are outraged after police allegedly mistook their son for a robbery suspect.
Kaylil Johnson says he was held at gunpoint by more than a dozen police officers Tuesday morning. His parents say the boy was running into their car because he missed the school bus when cops surrounded them.
Johnson?s mother Shanik says her husband kept telling police the boy was only 12, but they yanked him out of the car and threw him on the back of it. They asked him ?Where?s the gun, where?s the gun?? Shanik Johnsons says.
Police say they were in the area looking for an armed suspect who was involved in a robbery.
The Johnsons say they were questioned for 20 minutes about their son before the officers let him go. The boy was also searched, the family says. ?I'm not going to question the officers? tactics but as I said, it's a dangerous situation when we believe that one of the subject's we're pursuing has a weapon,? Detective Lt. Kevin Smith says. ?So our officers have to be very careful.?
Nassau police say they're doing an internal investigation. The Johnsons are suing the police department.
