Ronkonkoma residents who have been cleaning up the area's shoreline say they are overjoyed that an eyesore by the lake has been removed.
On Thursday, Suffolk County crews demolished an old bookstore that had burned down and crumbled on the lake's shoreline more than a year ago.
The eyesore on county park land got the attention of county officials after News 12 did a story on the efforts of the Lake Ronkonkoma Improvement Society.
Last year, residents said they were sick and tired of the mess that their lake had become, and formed the group this summer to clean up the years of dumped construction debris and trash.
"This group rolled up their sleeves and came out by the hundreds and said we are going to take our own action. That's why we have to be behind them 100 percent," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.
Although the group is excited with the cleanup, members say this is a first step and more needs to be done.
Another cleanup is scheduled to be held this Saturday and the public is invited to help.
