According to police, a passersby noticed flames coming from 256 Hawkins Ave. around 8:30 a.m. and called 911. Firefighters from the Ronkonkoma Fire Department discovered the body of 20-year-old Laura Giampino inside the first-floor apartment that she rented. The rest of the house was vacant.
Police say the origin of the fire and cause of Giampino's death remain unknown. Arson investigators were on the scene well into the night in search of clues, while Giampino's body was taken to the medical examiner's office.
