January first is right around the corner and all fifty states have made "First Day Hikes" a new year's tradition since 2012.

The events promote getting outdoors in the winter, and overall well-being.

The Southbury Land Trust and The Connecticut Forest and Park are among the organizations taking part. They say these hikes are a great way to begin fitness goals for the new year.

The hikes — while connecting people with nature — and are a great way to meet other outdoor enthusiasts.

President of the Southbury Land Trust says you can easily find a hike near to you.

Connecticut has "First Day Hikes" in places like Hammonasset, Kettletown State Park, Sleeping Giant, a lot of the larger parks. And there are all sorts of alternatives. And we really advocate for people to get outside, join a first day hike, and commune with nature.

The Miller Trail will be one of many included in this year's first day hikes.

The Connecticut Forest & Park Association is the first private conservation organization established in the state.

They help to ensure the lands are protected for future generations.
