Two developers are throwing themselves into the effort to revitalize Riverhead?s downtown, much to the excitement of many shop owners who have had to close their doors. However, not everyone thinks the plan will work.
Dozens of stores along Main Street have been closed for some time. Former shopkeeper Jacquelyn Byrne says a lack of pedestrians drove her to close her boutique. She says she?s not alone.
Business owners are hoping the town will approve development of a site near the train station by the Vintage Group. The developers want to build a multiplex theater, parking garage and shopping complex. The Apollo Group is in the process of buying property and seeking approval to rebuild Main Street.
Some feel it will give the area a needed boost, but others are skeptical. ?They thought Tanger would bring people downtown, but it didn't,? Eastender?s Coffee House owner Diane Reeve says.
Byrne says she would consider setting up shop again in Riverhead once she sees a shovel in the ground.
The Riverhead Town Board unanimously approved the Vintage Groups Project Wednesday afternoon.
