With gifts long unveiled and wrapping paper in the trash, many rushed to stores on the day after Christmas to make returns and to use gift cards.
Many Macy's stores around the country opened 6 a.m. Friday, including the one at the Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City. The store is one of many retailers to open early in order to facilitate returns in the belief that customers would stay and find something else to purchase.
Analysts say sales from Black Friday and Super Saturday, which is the last Saturday before Christmas, weren't as good as retailers had hoped. Experts predicted the day after Christmas would be the second busiest shopping day of the year.
A number of retailers expected to make upward of 20 percent of their total holiday gross on Friday alone.
