Town of Oyster Bay residents got the chance Monday evening to weigh in on a proposal to turn a controversial piece of land in Syosset into homes and retail shops.

Developer Simon Property Group wants to turn the former Cerro Wire property into a town center. The nearly 93-acre property would include 625 residences, upscale retail shops, restaurants, office spaces, two hotels and a 30-acre park.

The site is bordered by Robbins Lane to the west and the Long Island Expressway to the south.

The property was the focus of a 20-year battle pitting Taubman Centers against community residents. Taubman wanted to build a mega mall, including a Neiman-Marcus department store.

Civic groups protested because they said it would bring noise and congestion to the community. The residents eventually defeated the mall plan.

During the meeting at Oyster Bay Town Hall, residents appeared to so far like what they heard and saw of the new proposal, and some residents even offered suggestions to improve the plan. One concern is parking for people living in the proposed town center.

Residents who missed Monday's meeting can still make their voices heard. The town board will be accepting written comments on the plan until July 13.
