New power poles in Eastport charged up community complaints that they're an eyesore and went up without prior notification.

Several homeowners say they were caught off guard after large steel poles were installed in front of their homes, including one in front of Carolyn Ceruti's house on Eastport Manor Road.

Ceruti says it's out of character for the rural area, and she worries it will lower her property value.

PSEG officials say the steel poles are 79 feet high, are made to better withstand severe weather and provide a "much-needed system upgrade." They replaced older, wooden poles.

Ceruti says she didn't get any notification about the fact that the pole was being installed right in front of her house.

Neighbor David Johnson agrees.

"I think they should've really got a lot of feedback on the aesthetics, because it does change it," Johnson says. "It does alter it."

A PSEG spokesman says a letter was sent to all customers along the seven-mile project route, but Ceruti says she never received it. She says even if she had, it wouldn't have been enough.

"One of the things that we try to do is make sure that we can have our lessons learned from every interaction that we have with our customers," says Jeffrey Weir, the spokesman. "So if there's an opportunity that we can take from this, or something that we can learn from this so that we can do better in the future, we're going to make sure that we do that."

The project is expected to be completed next month.
