Throngs of residents told the Suffolk County Legislature Tuesday the burden of homeless sex offenders should be shared with communities countywide.
Michael Sacco of Flanders suggested creating additional sites to prevent the concentration of registered sex offenders in certain areas.
"They're entitled to human compassion," Sacco said. "So let's share that burden."
The Department of Social Services operates trailers used as temporary housing for homeless sex offenders. One sits in the parking lot at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead. Another is located in Westhampton. Sheriff's deputies guard each trailer at all times.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy's office said he's against creating sites for the sake of creating them. The Riverhead and Westhampton locations were chosen because they are secure and somewhat secluded, Chief Deputy County Executive Paul Sabatino said.
Regardless, residents near the current sites want the mobile homes moved elsewhere.
"These trailers have wheels on them, let's get the wheels rolling," one resident said.
Two bills on the issue are in committee. One would ban placing the trailers near libraries, a reference to the Riverhead location. The other bill would bar trailer placement near senior homes, which is in response to the Westhampton site.
