Pride flags put on a Christmas tree by a high school LGBTQ+ club were torn down hours after they were put up on Thursday.
Members of the Southold High School SAFER Club were stunned to learn what happened to the tree they decorated on Main Street in front of Polywoda Beverage.
The club's advisor saw the damage to the tree and shared the story online. Afterward, he says dozens of people came out to the tree this weekend to replace the missing decorations and Pride flags.
"You could see it now - it's beautiful that there are so many decorations on the tree and people have still offered to donate decorations," Myers said.
The SAFER Club stands for Student Alliance for Equality and Respect. It was founded at the high school to foster tolerance.
Despite the original disappointment that people were not tolerant of the LGBTQ+ decorations, SAFER President senior Sarah Serrano says the outpouring of support was in the true spirit of the holidays.
"It's really heartfelt that everyone came out and it's a community building thing," Serrano said.
The SAFER Club has also been offered two more trees in the area to decorate. They plan to decorate them on Thursday.
