A homeless shelter for women may soon be built in Flatlands, but local residents are unhappy with the idea.
The planned shelter would be located at 4612 Glenwood Road. Neighbors say they're annoyed with the disruptive construction, and they think the building will be too large for the small neighborhood.
The Flatlands-Flatbush Civic Group and local community leaders held a protest Sunday, arguing that the development would increase the population density by 125 percent and would damage the character of the community.
The protesters, among them Councilman Jumanee Williams, say they believe there is a definite need to address homelessness, but they're concerned about the magnitude of the 198-unit facility.
Developer Helm Equities and construction company Townhouse Builders are behind the project. The civic group says the company isn't following zoning laws, and says its work has caused damage to the foundations of dozens of nearby homes.
News 12 reached out to the developer and the construction company for comment, but has not yet heard back.
