Residents in Lindenhurst are pushing to get a local park cleaned up and renovated.

Concerned parents say broken beer bottles and syringes are among the unsavory items that can be found strewn about Lt. Edward Weckerle Memorial Park, which can create a dangerous situation for children. They also cite the park's dilapidated benches and old swings pose further threats to their kids.

One parent started a petition more than three weeks ago on Change.org asking local officials to make improvements to the park. Among the suggestions are handicap-accessible equipment and replacing sand with rubber mats.

Proponents of the petition say that the mayor and village board are receptive to the park upgrades, but the issue comes down to state funding. News 12 reached out to the mayor and a village board trustee, but has not heard back.

The Lindenhurst parents are expected to meet with town officials this week.
