Some residents in Riverhead are opposed to the location of a proposed medical marijuana dispensary, saying it's too close to home.
Suffolk's first dispensary is tentatively set to open inside an oncology office on East Main Street. Columbia Care, the group opening the dispensary, initially wanted to locate it at a former Blockbuster video store on Route 58. That plan was shot down because it was too close to Riverhead High School.
Residents like Bessie Sanders still think the new location is a problem. She lives in the community of Millbrook Gables and says her area is finally getting cleaned up. She feels a dispensary will bring drug trafficking back to the area.
The Riverhead Town Board decided not to pursue a moratorium, which would have delayed the dispensary from opening. Residents say they wish they would have been able to voice their opinion about the new location.
