A new report by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign finds that the number of vehicular accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists are on the rise. It also says that in the past three years, Hempstead Turnpike is the most dangerous road on Long Island.
In Nassau County, there have been more than 3,700 of those accidents in the last three years. More than 2,500 took place in Suffolk.
The most dangerous roads include Hempstead Turnpike, Merrick Road, Jericho Turnpike and New York Avenue.
Scott Velders, of Levittown, says it’s very difficult to cross Hempstead Turnpike. He says he’s been hit at least five times in the last five or six years.
Eric Alexander, who sits on the Tri-State Transportation Campaign's board, says there is much that can and should be done to make the roads safer for non-drivers, including crosswalks, medians and countdown timers.
