Narcan, the drug used to prevent a fatal overdose, is being used more on Long Island, according to authorities.

According to numbers for both Nassau and Suffolk counties, the medication was administered by law enforcement and emergency medical technicians a total of 1,300 times in 2016 alone. The number is 200 times more than the year before.

The drug is a lifesaving medication that can reverse the effects of a drug overdose, and some parents News 12 spoke to say it saved their child’s life.

Gary Gentile, of Port Jefferson, says he used Narcan to save his daughter’s life when she overdosed in their home.

Narcan is currently administered by police and first responders, but is also available at Long Island schools and libraries.
