The total number of homicides increased in 2015 in Nassau County over the previous year, while it decreased in Suffolk County.
According to Newsday, 24 people were killed in Nassau in 2015, up from 18 homicides in 2014.
In Suffolk, there were also 24 homicides in 2015, down from 29 killings in 2014.
Officials say the homicides were fueled primarily by gangs, domestic violence and drugs.
Records show that illegal guns factored in many of the deaths.
