A new report released today finds that there is a critical shortage of affordable housing in Suffolk County.

The details were unveiled at the Liberty Village complex in Amityville. Liberty Village is a subsidized housing complex for veterans who were once homeless. 

According to the report, the two most vulnerable groups are those with behavioral health challenges and those making less than $50,000 a year.

"The combination is leading to an extraordinary expense to the county - $19 million a year to house roughly 2,500 homeless people a night in Suffolk County," says Richard Koubeck, of the Welfare to Work Commission. "With that $19 million what could you do with affordable housing? Well I'm not a builder, but we could do a lot. We could do a lot!"
                                                                                                                                              
The report lists 14 recommendations on how to improve the current situation. One suggestion is to simply build more affordable housing.
