Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) announced a bill to protect Plum Island.
As News 12 has reported, the government wants to close the animal disease research facility on Plum Island, and sell the land to the highest bidder.
Zeldin announced that the House is passing a bill aimed at preventing the federal government from selling Plum Island to a developer.
The federal government is moving its animal disease research facility to Kansas, and wants to sell the 840-acre island to offset the costs.
Zeldin urged his colleagues in the Senate to act so the bill could be signed into law this year.
"None of us can stop fighting until this bill is passed in the Senate and signed into law by the president in 2016. This isn't an effort that we want in January to be starting over with," he said.
Zeldin and other critics want Plum Island to remain undeveloped.
