Some old social media posts by one of Rep. Tom Suozzi’s staff members have raised eyebrows in Nassau County.
Mariah Dignan, who works as a scheduler in the Democratic congressman's office, worked for about five months on the campaign of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran last year. She was dismissed when word of the posts became public.
A 2013 tweet attributed to her read: "I was gonna say [expletive] but then a black kid walked by. So I am gonna say it now. [Expletive].”
A 2012 Instagram picture included a derogatory term for gays, saying they were "dancing like psychopaths."
Dignan, 22, was a teen when she made the posts.
In a statement, Rep. Suozzi’s chief of staff wrote: "We condemn the reprehensible comments Mariah made as teenager on social media. She has apologized, learned a hard lesson and paid for her mistakes. She's taken workplace sensitivity training and deserves a second chance."
Carolyn Wiseman, of Hicksville, said the incident should serve as a reminder for all young people.
“…Be careful what you post because it's going to follow you forever,” she said.
