Officials say tightened security measures are in place as runners prepare for the Boston Marathon on Monday, one year after the deadly bombings that shook the city and the nation.

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) is familiar with the extensive security planning that's going into the race, which is the world's oldest annual marathon. King, who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, traveled to Boston this week to meet with police officials.

"I think you're going to see strong security from beginning to end, at all stages," King told News 12. He says there will be a coordinated effort between local police and the FBI, and runners and spectators can expect a strong police presence, both seen and unseen.

King says one of the challenges for law enforcement officials is the fact that race organizers expanded the field of runners by 9,000 people. He is still encouraging people to attend the race, saying it's just one way to show America's resolve in the wake of the bombing.
