Rep. Peter King made headlines Wednesday morning after saying the Republican Party should dump Steve Bannon, saying he looks "like some disheveled drunk that wandered onto the political stage."
Bannon, President Donald Trump's former chief political strategist and right-wing firebrand, backed Roy Moore during his unsuccessful bid for a Senate seat in Alabama. The president also endorsed Moore, even after allegations that he sexually abused a 14-year-old girl when he was in his 30s.
Political analyst Mike Dawidziak says the president's endorsement of Moore could be the last straw for Long Islanders already unhappy with the president's tax plan.
"I think Long Island has already begun to shift as far as how they would vote and a big part of that is the tax plan, which many Long Islanders have come to understand could be disastrous," said Dawidziak.
Rep. King called on Moore to drop out of the race more than a month ago after sexual assault allegations were reported by The Washington Post. Still, the congressman doesn't believe the special election will have an effect on local elections on Long Island.
"You run on your record and I'll be proud to run on my record of getting the job done," said Rep. King.
Bannon is scheduled to headline a fundraiser for Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin Thursday in Manhattan. Late last month, Zeldin said Bannon "has gotten a bad rap in many respects."
