The Town Board of North Hempstead voted unanimously to overturn a new zoning law on Monday. The law, which was passed in July, removed a long standing requirement called the ?mother-daughter provision? that let homeowners rent out apartments to blood relatives only.
Residents were displeased with the new law, fearing overcrowding in schools and other negative impacts.
Hundreds of community members voiced their opinions at a town board meeting last week and their words were heard.
Even though the apartment law was repealed, town board members still expressed a need to make affordable housing accessible to young people and seniors.
