Red foxes on the move in West Islip
Some West Islip residents are reporting sightings of cute but cunning creatures in their neighborhood: red foxes. Homeowner Eddy Petion used his cell phone to capture video of a pair this week as they ran around in circles in his yard. Neighbor Kathy Demeo says she can hear them "screaming" to each other at night. Experts from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) say January and February mark the peak breeding season for the clever critters. Experts also say that red fox populations are on the rise on the Island because they have no natural predators and can find an abundance of food. DEC wildlife officials say red foxes are typically afraid of people and are not likely to pose much harm. They also say it's a myth that fox sightings in the daytime can indicate rabidity.
