The two men accused of stealing a fire chief's SUV from a fire department parking lot pleaded not guilty in court Monday.
Raymond Peruggi and Corey Smith, both 23, were arraigned on grand larceny charges in Central Islip.
Police say the two suspects stole East Moriches Fire Chief Bryan Kelly's SUV from outside the firehouse early Sunday morning. Kelly says the door was unlocked, the keys were in the ignition and he was about to leave for an emergency call.
Police say the SUV was spotted several hours later in Rocky Point. It was chased by officers through Shoreham, Riverhead, Southampton, Quogue and finally Eastport, where it skidded off the road into a snow bank.
Police say Smith was in the passenger seat. They believe Peruggi was the driver.
Prosecutors said both men have extensive criminal histories and have served time in jail.
