Six daytime burglaries in the past two months have members of a New Hyde Park neighborhood taking action to protect themselves.
Homeowner Sal Guccione says he and his neighbors in the area north of Hillside Avenue are starting a neighborhood watch program to reinforce vigilance. He says precautions homeowners have been taking, like reinforcing and fortifying doors and windows, haven?t worked.
Joe Ditta, another homeowner, says the neighborhood watch is all about watching out for each other. ?We're just aware of what's going on when they're leaving on vacation, when they're picking up children and we're keeping an eye out for our neighbors," he says.
Neighbors agree they'd like to see more police presence. Nassau Det. Sgt. Tony Repalone says the Third Precinct has an investigation under way and will heighten patrols. He says the precinct has also assigned special operations officers to keep an eye on developments.
