Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy was celebrated across Long Island Monday, with rallies held in Massapequa Park and Elmont.
The group Long Island Peaceful Protests rallied at the Massapequa Park train station to remember and honor Dr. King's dream Monday with a mindset of love, unity and equality.
"We see that right now there's so much unrest and there's so much violence and there's so much hate and racism, and it's like you almost feel crushed," says Terrel Tuosto. "But now here we are, we're showing there is hope here, we are a community of all different races, and we can actually make change."
Organizers say they want to encourage people to get out and do something in their communities to promote equality and change.
In Elmont, a group walked through their community's streets without chanting or cheering, saying their goal was simply to remind their neighbors of how much has been accomplished and how much more needs to be done.
"No matter what or who is in power, or what's going on in the world, we have to remember to be kind to each other," says Sarah Campbell, of Elmont Strong.
"The importance of how far we've gotten from the time of segregation until now and then we still have to work on a lot of things moving forward as a community," says Natasha Welch.
