Many Long Island residents faced a tougher than normal commute Wednesday after rain and heavy winds damaged some roads.
Sunrise Highway in Wantagh was closed for four and a half hours after a truck smashed into a low-hanging traffic light. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials say the incident threw off all the other traffic lights on the highway. Fallen trees downed power lines and blocked roads in Woodbury, Massapequa and Huntington. Long Island Power Authority officials say 16,000 homes lost power.
Officials say power had been restored to most areas by 4:30 p.m. DOT workers are hoping the traffic lights will be fixed on Sunrise Highway by Wednesday night.
