Racist bulletin board posting found in Town of Hempstead building in Levittown
A racist bulletin board posting inside a Town of Hempstead highway facility has prompted an investigation.
A picture of a monkey was posted on the bulletin board alongside a picture of an African-American employee who works in the building. The picture shows a baby monkey and the words "Jimmy's baby picture."
Jimmy Howard, who has worked for the town for eight years, reported the incident. He says that the posting was embarrassing and hurtful.
Town of Hempstead officials say they are addressing what they call a "hate-fueled racial incident."
"You have my word, you have my vow, this is not going to go unpunished," says Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murry. "We are not going to rest until we get to the bottom of this heinous act."
Murray says that besides the town's internal investigation, Nassau police and the district attorney are also involved.
The town says in response to this racial incident, it is mandating new and more intensive diversity and sensitivity training for all the employees who work in the facility.
Twenty-five employees work at the town building.
