The New York Public Service Commission approved a National Grid rate hike Thursday, forcing ratepayers to shell out hundreds more dollars each year for natural gas.

The new prices will be phased in over three years.

In year one, the average bill will increase by about $33 per month. In year two, another $8 per month will be added on top of that. And in year three, the bill will go up by another $19.

In total, the average bill will increase by about $60 per month by September 2026.

National Grid says the increase is needed to meet the state's clean energy goals, and to ensure a safe and reliable delivery system.

Opponents say the rate hike will be devastating for some residents, who are already struggling to make ends meet.
