A heated public forum in Long Beach was held to discuss a controversial plan to run an electric transmission line through the community.
The high-voltage cables would shuttle electricity from offshore wind turbines to a power grid in Oceanside.
Some residents say the electromagnetic fields could bring a higher risk of cancer and other illnesses.
There are also concerns about the turbines’ effect on marine life.
Lauren Shane, a spokesperson for Empire Wind US, said safety is a top concern.
“This is a very thorough process to vet the project and to look at these aspects to make sure it’s safe,” Shane said.
The project, called Empire Wind 2, is expected to bring clean, sustainable energy to more than 700,000 homes.
The New York State Public Service Commission will decide if the proposal moves forward.
