Civic groups and activists were out protesting last month?s police shooting of a Freeport man Saturday.
Frantz Byer, 21, and an alleged gang member, is in critical condition after being shot on Leonard Avenue in July. Officers involved said they were chasing Byer when he turned and pointed a gun at them. Witnesses say the object he pulled out was a whiskey bottle.
Byer?s mother and others are pleading with police to release the names of the officers who shot her son.
??I think the community has a right to know that, because we're concerned these officers are still back out on the street policing the community,? Bishop J. Raymond Mackey of Tabernacle of Joy Church said.
Byer's family was joined by dozens of demonstrators who took the streets to protest what they describe as an act of police brutality. Protestors said the demonstration was against violence, not law enforcement.
Freeport police declined to comment on the case citing the ongoing investigation.
