Town of Hempstead lawmakers are proposing a new town law that would reserve several spots at LIRR train stations for electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino spray painted a green car logo on one of the possible spots at the Bellmore LIRR station on Thursday.
Santino wants to reserve four reserved spots in Bellmore, Seaford, Wantagh, Merrick and Baldwin. LIRR stations in Oceanside, Inwood and Hewlett would get two spots.
While there won't be charging stations at the spots, Santino says the town is looking for a grant to install charging stations there.
The reserved spots would be located close to the station, and some commuters tell News 12 that the new law would take away good spots.
"Not everyone has an electric car, so it would hurt a little bit," says Steven Seidler, of Bellmore.
Town lawmakers will consider the proposal at their next meeting in January.
