Two Valley Stream Central High School students were arrested on prom night Friday and accused of buying alcohol for post-prom festivities.
Nassau Police Det. Lt. Kevin Smith said the department is cracking down this month across the Island as high school seniors head out for their proms. Officers are checking limos, drivers and passengers at many prom locations in an effort to curb underage drinking, Smith said.
Marge Lee, of the not-for-profit drunk driving awareness group DEDICATEDD, said prom-night drinking is a big problem.
"Underage kids do not say 'Let's go out this evening and have a glass of wine.' They're going to get blitzed," Lee said. "And any parent that believes otherwise needs to take their head out of the sand."
Valley Stream Central High School offered pre and post-prom activities where students could gather in an alcohol-free environment and take pictures. The arrested students were not permitted to attend any of the events.
