Communities across Long Island will cast their ballots on local school district budgets, with many facing tough decisions. Dozens of jobs are expected to be let go off and several districts are looking to pierce the state tax cap. One of the districts facing a major budget crisis is the South Country School District. Investigators found no evidence of fraud or stolen money, but say there's been years of poor financial oversight and mistakes. Voters will decide on a more than 13% tax increase and dozens of job cuts. In a statement, the district says all financial missteps have been corrected.
There are plenty of changes that are coming to the Town of Huntington. That includes a plan to build 400 apartments in Melville. Town of Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth spoke with News 12's Rich Barrabi about the changes that are coming.
The Village of Valley Stream is set to receive $10 million as part of the state's Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Officials say this will allow the village to advance transformative projects that include increased pedestrian and bike access and new signage and lighting displays in the community. The village is also looking at developments with both housing and shops.
