Two weeks ago, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that in the face of a $400 million budget deficit, he plans to cut $20 million from the Suffolk Police Department in 2021. Bellone says it's not an attempt to "defund" the police. He says instead, it's a fiscal necessity -- unless the federal government provides millions of dollar in aid -- and soon. But Republican county lawmakers say the federal government already sent about $283 million to the county - and that the problem is really about how Suffolk handles its finances.
Joining News 12's Rich Barrabi to discuss is the Suffolk Legislature's Presiding Officer, Democrat Rob Calarco, and the Legislature's Minority Leader, Republican Tom Cilmi.
