A treacherous stretch of road near the Long Island Expressway in Yaphank is wreaking havoc on vehicles.

Drivers told News 12 that potholes along the service road on the LIE near Exit 66 are dangerous and damaging to their cars.

"It's a shame because it's this bad of shape and we haven't even had any ice yet," says Wayne Gutschow, of Yaphank. "We're just starting the winter. Now, I got a bent rim just because I was driving through here."

The state Department of Transportation says maintenance for the stretch of road is Suffolk County's responsibility. The county's Department of Public Works commissioner says it's the state's problem.

"Of the 10 years I've been with the county... we never maintained that section. We do have an agreement with [the DOT] to maintain for snow, but not for potholes," says Commissioner Gilbert Anderson.

A spokesman for the DOT sent News 12 plans from 1966 that appear to show the county is responsible for the pavement.

After News 12 reached out to the county about the potholes, they sent repair crews out to the road to smooth things over late Wednesday afternoon.

Despite filling the potholes, the county maintains that it is still the state's responsibility.
