An advertisement for an upcoming LGBT pride event in Long Beach was found vandalized early Tuesday morning at the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road station.
The poster was advertising Long Island Pride, a three-day festival running from June 21-23 in Long Beach.
"This is more than vandalism. This is hate," says LGBT Network CEO David Kilmnick. "It was intentional, and it takes a lot of effort to tear a sign like this down."
Nassau County police say it's too early to determine if it can be considered a hate crime, but First Deputy Commissioner Kevin Smith says "it certainly seems that way."
MTA officials said in a statement to News 12: "The LIRR immediately removed the damaged advertisement and we are working with our advertising contractor to have it replaced as quickly as possible. The MTA and the LIRR have no tolerance for discrimination, and the MTA police are investigating this incident."
Some people News 12 spoke with consider the vandalism unacceptable. One person says it was "foolish," while another called it "absolutely horrible."
Kilmnick says he hopes surveillance cameras on the train platform captured the incident.
Sources tell News 12 that there are reports of a second damaged sign being investigated, but it's unknown at this point what was on it.
