A Port Washington family is happy to be home Sunday after enduring more than 28 hours aboard a delayed Amtrak train.
Karien Chiel and her two children were aboard the Silver Meteor from Florida to New York Thursday when their nightmare began. The Amtrak train was delayed twice after a freight train derailed in Savannah. Due to the delays, the passengers were running out of toilet paper, food and patience.
Chiel said even after the derailment was cleared up, the freight train took priority over the passengers. She says even though her family has always preferred to take the train, this ride was probably their last.
The Amtrak train arrived at Penn Station Saturday. Chiel and a number of other passengers have requested refunds following the ordeal.
