(11/06/06) FARMINGDALE - Much has been made of the political pressure Legislator David Mejias (D-Farmingdale) has put on Representative Pete King (R-NY) as the 3rd Congressional District race comes to a close.
King is a heavy hitter in the House of Representatives, serving on the International Relations Committee and chairing the Homeland Security Committee. With immigration as one of the year's most prominent issues, King sponsored the bill that will create a 700-foot wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.
Mejias, a two-term Nassau County legislator, paints King as a rubber stamp for President George W. Bush's policies. Mejias says King fully supports what the legislator calls Bush's failed courses of action in Iraq and in the war on terror. The Mejias campaign has worked hard to get out the vote in a typically conservative district.
Even if King is re-elected to another term, he will lose his chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee if the Democrats take the House majority.
